What game are you really good at?
I am a game playing fool. As I've mentioned here before, I spent quite a lot of time in stir. All a grown man can do for months at a time, is exercise, and play games. Cards, dominoes, chess, etc, etc. "All games, all games well." Mostly, my top skills are in pinochle, and poker. I can brag with confidence knowing I won't be shown up. (hehe)
Who would you like to trade places with for one day and why?
Submitted by Nathalie.
I got a friend, an extended family member actually, who's son has a horrible disease. Everyday the guy is in a huge amount of pain. it's not just that this thing will kill him, it will, eventually. In the meantime, he just hurts. I'd trade places with him for a day. I'd get some graciousness and humility, he could just not feel pain for a day.,
When has your first impression of someone turned out to be completely wrong?
Submitted by Mana'olana.
I learned some time ago that my first impression is almost always wrong. Believe it or not, I have discussed this with others many times. Several years ago, I started an almost backward reliance on my ability to nail someone in my first look. I have gotten somewhat better but even now, I rarely trust the first impression. People are so complex and so good at disguising themselves. I have to know a person for a while before I make any decision on who, or what, they are.
What are the 5 words that best describe your life right now?
Uncomplicated; Free; Solamente'; comfortable; charmed.
I have said before, I am a lucky guy. Things are swell even on my worst day. I tried to think of a negaitive, I got zilch. I'd have to really whine. Only semi-complaint.....no co-pilot.
I have missed out on a lot of really good ideas from the question of the day thingy. I want to participate in some of those because as I read other's from my "hood', I was intrigued, even compelled to respond so over the next day or so, I am gonna catch up on as many as I can. I've kinda had some writers block anyhow and what a great way to get back on track.....duh...
QotDay Patriotic..."Do you consider yourself a patriotic person?"
I have, in the past had so much to say about this because I believed patriotism was something so much different than I believe now. I will say that I know I am patriotic. I am patriotic to the idea of a free society. I am not one who believes that it is patriotic to blindly follow just any leader. A leader is human and is just as likely to go off course as any other person. I am a big advocate of the constitution and what it said and what it means. I believe in total freedom. I believe in taking responsibility for yourself. I believe that if my behaviors have no ill affect on anyone else, hurt no other's freedoms, then I should be allowed that behavior. I believe my way of thinking, politically speaking, is called Libertarianism. Small on government, big on self-reliance and responsibility. I there is no victim, there should be no crime.
What was the last wedding you went to? Were you in the wedding?
The last and only wedding I have ever attended was my own. Jan. 25, 1985. Quite a long time ago and the end of that marriage has been some time as well. The saddest thing is that this question reminds me that I missed my oldest daughter's wedding. One of my biggest regrets in life. I was way to sick to attend and apparently the wedding didn't depend on me being there. huh...? Anyhow, I always wanted to have some part in another's wedding but so far, haven't been asked. OMG, why did you have to bring this up??
I talk to a lot of people everyday. I talk to family and friends fromm all over the country. I talk to people online from all over the world. I talk to myself. I have discussed everything from smallpox to baseball. Here's what I don't understand.... Not one single person has told me that they are happy about the state of the world. Not one. None. I want to know, why? If no-one is comfortable with it, why,....is it? Why can't we change it? I am doing all I can do. I think. I discuss it, for one thing, I vote, I don't hurt anybody, what else is there? I'll take anything, people, any suggestions. I'm serious, is there something more I can do? I'll do it, I assure you.
Peace! (really)
When I was a teenager, I had a friend named Artie. I knew him from the neighborhood. He, like me, kind of hung out with a rough crowd. He was a decent guy although, not the smartest kid in the class.
Artie and I kind of went our separate ways and I often wondered in the old days, whatever happened to him.
I was arrested in the early eighties and had forgotten about Artie for the most part. Then after I'd been in prison a couple of years, guess who suddenly shows up on the yard one day? That’s right, my old pal, Artie.
"Wow buddy," I exclaimed, "what the hell brings you to this God Forsaken place?" Artie just kind of hung his head real sad-like and tells me "I killed some people."
I was flabbergasted; although Artie was dumber than a stump, I always knew him to be a gentle, caring, human being. He went on to tell me the story. The story made me laugh, it made me cry, and it helped me to understand why you don’t judge a book by its cover, why you don’t judge until you've walked a mile in someone else’s shoes.
Artie had always been very close to his older brother, Eric.
Eric had a girlfriend that treated him (Eric) badly.
Artie always hated that bitch and wished Eric would dump her. Of course, up until a short time before this calamity took place, Eric was perfectly happy with his girl and just smiled at dumb old Artie's opinion.
One day while the two brothers were talking, Eric let it slip that he was unhappy.
The reason for his unhappiness was his girl. Eric had an idea she was cheating on him. He, in fact, knew she was cheating, knew who she was cheating with and was very despondent about it. He told Artie that she was cheating with the butcher at the Safeway where she worked. He also told him that he was afraid to do anything about it because they had been together so long that if he chased her off, she'd leave with the car, the house, everything, and he didn't know what to do.
Artie was enraged, he hated this bitch for breaking his brother's heart and for doing it in such a fashion that Eric felt he could do nothing about it. As they continued to talk, Eric, at one point, said jokingly, "I'd hire someone to kill them both but I could only pay them a dollar." Artie took this very seriously. He told his brother, "Man, I'll kill them both for a dollar." Eric didn't really respond he just shrugged it off as being just two men talking, not really meaning anything.
The next morning Artie was at Safeway at 5am to await the arrival of Eric's girlfriend and the butcher. Both were scheduled to be to work at 5:30 am.
He watched them as they arrived. The butcher arrived on his motorcycle first. He opened the door with a key and relocked the door. When the girl arrived, Artie watched as the butcher came to the door and unlocked it. Then, as bold as anything he'd ever seen, they kissed, right there in front of the whole world.
Artie saw red. He was enraged. He ran into the Safeway and grabbed the butcher by his neck and twisted until the life went out of him. All the while, the girl was screaming, "no Artie, no." He then turned on her and grabbed her by the throat and twisted, again, until there was no life left.
Both were dead.
I was amazed and just a bit suspect of this story. Artie looked completely serious, and very sad, though I had to ask him. "Did your brother give you a dollar?"
Artie didn't even smile; he looked at me and said "Wait here."
He returned a few minutes later with a newspaper cut-out, folded in his hand. He said, "I know you don't believe me, but here's proof.
He handed me the newspaper which I unfolded to a headline that read 'artichokes two for a dollar at Safeway.’
I have a friend that works very hard for a large transport company. He has worked for them for several years and is an excellent employee. I have been a supervisor at trucking companies and workers like this guy are few and far between. Really. He comes to work on time, does a good job and keeps a great attitude.
Several months back, he was injured at work. A stack of boxes, filled with books, fell over and landed on him. He ended up with a serious injury. He crushed a vertebrae, sprained his shoulder muscle, and some less serious stuff. Excruciatingly painful, as well as, debilitating. He would be out of work for months.
This injury happened on a Monday morning. The previous Saturday, he had been home and had smoked some marijuana. He had smoked it at home in the afternoon, alone.
The company, as a matter of policy, after an accident, drug tests anyone involved. See where I’m going with this. Because he had smoked some pot, he has been refused his insurance. His family is suffering. His children are going without. His wife has taken on a second job. His marriage is in trouble. I guess some would say that he brought this on himself. By knowingly breaking a law of this fine land. I say that is ridiculous. The man is a responsible, tax-paying, family man. A good husband and father. One of the best people I know. I am sickened by it. I really believe that pot should not be illegal, I think it should not be grouped in with other drugs and mind-altering substances. Keep in mind, two days had passed, he was most certainly not stoned at work. I believe it’s an outrage. I would love to hear any other opinions on the matter. Pro or con, in fact, if you can change my mind on the matter, my hat is off to you. Thanks.
